WHERE TO EAT IN OAKLEIGH
If you wanna feel like you are in Greece in the middle of Melbourne, just head over to Oakleigh’s Greek Eat Streets, around Eaton Mall…Endaxi?
On this Sunny Sunday, we were hunting for the best gyros and found it at Orexi Souvlaki Bar. The best place for a taste of real lamb gyros roasted over charcoal with a Greek Mythos beer to wash it down.
Then off to the Greek Bakery for their Thessaloniki-style koulouri, sort of like a large Greek style bagel bread covered in sesame seeds and lots of syrupy Hellenic sweets like baklava and home style galactobureko (Greek vanilla slice).
It was ice cream licking weather, so it was off to Pagoto to choose from their Greek inspired gelato flavours…including Ouzo, Mastiha and Baklava…but it was the refreshing Greek Yogurt with Walnuts and Honey gelato, that came recommended (by my Italian pseudo-Greek girlfriend actually!) that we all tucked into.
And of course, you can’t visit Oakleigh without sitting in one of the cafenios and whiling away the rest of the day with good conversation and a true Greek-style cafe frappe…
Yiasou!
