Indonesian Minced Beef Skewers with Kecap Manis

Spiced meat skewers with a sweet and salty sauce are delicious served with fresh salad and flat bread.

Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
  • 1/4 cup kecap manis
  • 1/4 cup lime or lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon sambal oelek chilli paste
  • 4 spring onions, chopped
  • 1 kg beef mince (or beef & pork mince)
  • 1/4 cup basil leaves
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons ground turmeric
  • 2 teaspoons sambal oelek chilli paste, extra
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

Combine kecap manis, lime juice, chilli and 1 chopped spring onion together to make sauce. Bring the mince to room temperature. Reserving some spring onions for garnish, blend all the remaining ingredients together to make a paste and mix into the mince until well combined. Mold 2 tablespoons of mixture around the top of a skewer and repeat to make 20 skewers. Chargrill or BBQ until browned on all sides and cooked through (approximately 10 minutes). Serve with salad vegetables - tomato, lettuce leaves, carrot sticks, cucumber - and flat bread or rice and drizzle with sauce.
