Makes:

4 large burgers or 6 slider size burgers

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 slice white bread, crusts removed
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 500g beef or lamb mince
  • 1 carrot, peeled and grated
  • 1 onion, grated
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 4-6 toasted burger buns
  • lettuce leaves, cheese slices, sliced tomato and pickles, for serving
  • EXTRA SPECIAL SAUCE
  • ¼ cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon American or French mustard
  • 1 teaspoon gherkin relish or 1 gherkin, finely diced

Method

  • Soak bread in milk in a large bowl and crumble with your fingers. Mix in all other ingredients except oil together and form into 4-6 patties with wetted hands. Heat oil in a large non-stick frying pan and cook patties, covered, for 5 minutes or until golden brown on underside. Turn over and cook, covered, for a further 3 minutes until cooked through. Alternatively, cook on a chargrill pan or bbq, using a piece of foil to cover if needed.
  • Serve in buns with lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles and Extra Special Sauce.
  • EXTRA SPECIAL SAUCE Combine all ingredients together and use as required.

Tips

  • Use a burger patty mould to press into even sized patties.
  • Uncooked beef patties freeze well. Open freeze on a baking paper lined plate until fully frozen, then pack into freezer bags for up to 3 months.
  • STYLING Spread bun base with sauce, place lettuce on top, then a burger, cheese, tomato, pickle and dollop of sauce. Place bun top leaning on the side.
  • DRINKS Coca Cola, Sarsaparilla or Beer
